The best landing page builder: Wix loses to Base44 and Lovable

David (00:00)
You know, some companies are AI wrappers. Wix is a GoDaddy wrapper.

Ilan (00:03)
That's right.

David (00:05)
Hey everybody. This is Prompt and Circumstance. My name's David.

Ilan (00:09)
and I'm Ilan.

David (00:10)
And today we're going to be comparing three of the top AI powered website makers.

All right. So, uh, we're going to be looking at Wix, Base 44 and Lovable. So we chose these because they're really known as, uh, Hey, look, if you want to make a website or webpage, uh, these are the names that you want to know.

Wix has been around before vibe coding and it used to be the thing that they would have templates and all of that and now they've really dove into the AI powered side of things. Base 44 and Lovable both grew up in the AI powered vibe coding era and I believe Base 44 recently got acquired this year.

Ilan (01:09)
By Wix!

David (01:10)
by Wix. Okay, so that'll be interesting to see how they compare. All right.

Ilan (01:15)
⁓ So David, let's talk a little bit about the background here. Why are we creating a landing page?

David (01:22)
Yeah, so our loyal subscribers might know that we're putting together this ⁓ product called Teachr, which is something that helps teachers ⁓ grade assignments. It really takes care of a lot of that and gets them back their lives. And you know, you want to have a good landing page market to understand and be aware of your product. And so that's our goal today is to make the landing page for

Teachr and we want it to be captivating and professional and all the great things about a good landing page.

Ilan (01:55)
Yeah. And to get to the idea for the landing page, we used the AI copilot we talked about in a previous episode. So for those who aren't aware, we built an AI copilot for this product where it has all the context about the product strategy, the user interviews, competitive analysis, and then

the code base as well for the product. And you can just go in there and ask questions and it acts as a sparring partner

And so for today, we used our AI copilot to create a prompt for what would a landing page that sells the value of this product that we're building to a user look like?

David (02:41)
That's right. And so as I paste in the prompt into the three different apps, you're going to see that it talks about ⁓ the content to put into there. You know, some of the FAQ some of the pricing, but also some of the styling as well. The design language is in there as well. So I'll paste that, it's a Lovable into Base 44. And over here on the Wix site, by the way, it's not responsive.

Ilan (03:01)
That's right.

David (03:09)
the Wix site, a little bit of concern there. So I'm going to go ahead and maximize that and let's go and create a new site.

I guess I want to start with a chat. Okay.

Ilan (03:18)
I guess so.

I can see why they bought Base 44.

David (03:22)
Yeah, this is a little bit slow. Do I just do it paste my prompt in or?

Ilan (03:26)
Let's try.

David (03:26)
I feel like, I don't know if this is the right thing to do.

You know, there's sparkles, and that's how you know that it's AI. Otherwise you wouldn't know.

Ilan (03:35)
Mm-hmm.

No.

David (03:37)
What? Okay, I mean, it's kind of in the prompt.

Ilan (03:38)
You

David (03:40)
It just asked what the project name was for the listeners. And that was already obvious in the prompt. Okay. I feel like this is a little bit too rudimentary. It's asking what content we will feature on our site. ⁓ look at that. It's building it on the right-hand side. ⁓ But I already told it what the content is. I dumped everything in with the initial question.

Ilan (04:04)
Try copy pasting again.

David (04:05)
When in doubt, just repeat yourself verbatim. That'll teach the AI.

Ilan (04:09)
Ha

The site type virtual assistant already doesn't understand what we're trying to accomplish here.

This is like the grandpa version of, ⁓ of vibe coding.

David (04:23)
Yeah,

All right. Do you know what? I'm just going keep pasting it in. You read this prompt enough times and maybe eventually you'll figure yourself out.

Ilan (04:29)
You

David (04:35)
The unique selling points that teacher has, which by the way is in the prompt. And so what I'm going to do is just paste in that same prompt again. This is disappointing on the part of Wix. Again, you know, being a brand that is a leader in website creation. They can do a lot better than this. mean, have a look at your competition. All right.

Ilan (05:02)
You're all set.

David (05:03)
It's awesome. Go to dashboard.

Okay, so it's preparing a dashboard and it's installing apps and it's generating custom services. I don't know what that means. I just want it to create a site. I guess it's creating a site on Wix and it's doing all of the plugins. Is that how that's working?

Ilan (05:19)
I suppose

so.

David (05:19)
Oh good, no upsell me before I see any kind of product that's asking me to buy a custom domain. Can I see a site first?

Generate a site design, okay? I guess this was the button I was looking for after all.

You know, somewhere in Wix product management, they're like, okay, we need to maximize friction to website creation because we don't want to burn all of our precious tokens. Yeah. Yeah. Our OKR is the number of upsells. Okay. So you know that we're going to make it for teacher. I don't know if calling it a virtual assistant is the right thing to say.

Ilan (05:41)
That's right. Because otherwise how are we going to upsell people along the way?

David (05:59)
So they're going to start by creating a site brief. Okay. Well, all right. We're let that run for a little bit and maybe let Wix figure itself out. It has a nice little globe here. And I'm just going to get started with the rest. So with Base 44 and Lovable, I'm just going to say go with the prompt.

Ilan (06:02)
Mm-hmm.

David (06:18)
And away they go.

Base 44 says it's starting a conversation and that's a little bit concerning.

Okay, it's coming up with a plan. That's a bit Replit feeling.

Ilan (06:25)
Yes, everyone likes to plan these days.

David (06:26)
Lovable is also doing

a bit of a plan.

Ilan (06:29)
That's right. Got to keep the human in the loop

David (06:31)
It's not asking me for anything. It's just saying, hey, by the way, here's my plan. I'm just going. Yeah, exactly. Okay, yeah, it seems to be doing a thing.

Ilan (06:34)

Here's my plan, YOLO!

Ilan (06:43)
Now is the perfect time for me to tell you about our sponsor for this week, Querio. Have you ever found yourself blocked from answering a product question because you had to wait for a data team? Querio's AI powered data analyst sits on top of your data stack and allows you to ask natural language questions to get answers immediately. Try today by going to querio.ai and let them know that David and Ilan sent you for two months free.

That's a thousand dollar value for our audience.

David (07:12)
all right. look, Base 44 has been spinning its wheels for 42 minutes and it's getting, it's got stuck at of all things, the footer section. I don't know what kind of footer it's putting together, but it's been on this for a long time.

Ilan (07:30)
Interesting.

David (07:31)
So maybe we'll let that continue to spin while we have a look at the others. So let's go have a look at Wix. So.

Ilan (07:36)
Should you refresh the page?

David (07:41)
Okay, I guess Wix's website here, it.

There's buttons that I would like to interact with. There's a preview on the right-hand side, but because the window was small, the preview was also microscopic. And now that I've full sized my window, it does not resize, which ⁓ again, another ding against Wix in terms of responsiveness. So

Ilan (08:04)
Totally. Should we refresh the page

and see if that fixes the issue here?

David (08:10)
Yeah, I'll do that. Let's do that. man, now it's dangerous. Do we want to, we want to reload the site? Are you sure? Well, you know what, why don't we just, ⁓ why don't we continue with this design? How about that? And then we'll just see what it comes up with. Now, okay, stop upselling me for a new domain. I'll just continue to the editor.

Ilan (08:12)
⁓ no, we might lose everything.

Okay.

David (08:28)
Again, obviously an OKR for the Wix team.

Ilan (08:30)
Mm-hmm.

David (08:31)
Alright, so spinning up the editor.

Ilan (08:32)
I mean, those domains have got

to be free money.

David (08:34)
I'd imagine, yeah, mean, they just charge a premium on top of it.

Ilan (08:38)
Mm-hmm.

David (08:38)
So adding Wix pricing plans? You know, some companies are AI wrappers. Wix is a GoDaddy wrapper.

Ilan (08:39)
They're just using GoDaddy in the background.

That's right.

Well, it's certainly not an AI wrapper.

David (08:51)
So, ⁓ you know, it's funny to me that it's still putting on finishing touches because I thought it would have already been done. Like, it, is it just that it, puts together the design template and now it's actually applying it? It's not clear to me.

All right, so as this is coming up in the prompt, were colors, colors that were defined. Does this align with those colors, the color choices?

Ilan (09:18)
Not really, No.

The background color, maybe. The background is ⁓ parchment, but the header text is comfortable green. And yeah, this is looking, it's comfortable, a little bit more brown than green. But it is capturing the...

David (09:27)
Mm-hmm.

Yeah.

Ilan (09:46)
feeling that we want to have on the landing page, which is simple, elegant, not quite the type of imagery that we wanted to have though, which is more pencil drawing,

or similar kind of design language, right, with just simple sketches instead of images which tell you, ⁓ this is this is easy. And it's just like sketching on a paper.

David (10:11)
Hmm.

Yeah, makes sense. You know, I wonder whether this image was generated or whether it was pulled from stock.

Ilan (10:27)
It does look like a stock image, but now to be fair with generated images these days, it's hard to tell.

David (10:33)
All right, let's scroll down and see how this goes. I mean, this looks like it's generated because ⁓ the text is not a language that I recognize. ⁓ And like, I see some words that are smushed together.

Ilan (10:49)
That is true. Mm-hmm. Yeah, who scrolls with their middle finger?

David (10:49)
The hand looks a little bit awkward.

Well, yeah, actually, I think this person is scrolling with their index and ring finger only. And it did not adhere to the prompt where, first of all, there's no services being offered, like in terms of AI grading workshop, integration masterclass, and so forth. Like the pricing was very well spelled out. So we just kind of made this up.

Ilan (11:08)
No.

David (11:18)
It's alright, but honestly not something that I would say is a passing grade.

Ilan (11:27)
No, I mean, it didn't adhere at all to the prompt that we gave it. We had a very clear idea of what this landing page would look like. And that was described fully in the prompt. And at best it understood the purpose of the tool in the about us section. But otherwise I would say that it didn't get anything else right.

David (11:36)
Mm-hmm.

Mm-hmm.

So here it is in mobile view. But again, the content itself just does not adhere. So I think we're done. All right. While Base 44 continues to render the FAQ accordion items, let's head over here to Lovable and see what we got.

Ilan (11:58)
That's right.

David (12:07)
Hey, look at that. Get your life back.

Ilan (12:08)
That this is much more of the style that we were looking for from the from the prompt, the pencil sketch image on the right. The messaging is the messaging that we provided, right? This is the real core problem that we're solving for teachers that they want their life back. They're spending their life marking and

David (12:34)
Mm-hmm.

Ilan (12:35)
the color scheme adheres better to what the expectations were. I actually like what it did with the colors, not using the green as the text color, but more as like a high, an accent color exactly.

David (12:52)
and accents color.

Mm-hmm.

Ilan (12:55)
It used to.

David (12:55)
And I believe these

were numbers that we had provided in the prompt. ⁓

Ilan (12:59)
That's right. So it

did not hallucinate the numbers or the value that providing.

David (13:06)
Okay, and it does the explainer of how it works.

It's not bad. I mean, this one here, it'd be great ⁓ if the words were correct, correct English words, but that's okay.

Ilan (13:20)
I also think it

would be nice if the three images used here shared a similar aesthetic.

David (13:27)
Yeah, they're both that I mean, they're all they're all pencil sketchy, but in a different way, just subtly different. Yeah.

Ilan (13:32)
Exactly.

Different backgrounds. Exactly like you said, subtly different styling.

And same thing here with the value props. The iconography changes between the three value props, but it did adhere to the value props that we put into the prompt.

David (13:45)
Mm-hmm.

And likewise with the, with the pricing where for the first 10 assignments, it's free. And then next 50 is a certain price. then next 50 is another price. So good job on that. And it even highlighted the middle one as per the standard, ⁓ you know, good, better, best practice.

So, I mean, good job on, a layout and everything. mean, the FAQ section, I mean, so far this page looks beautiful. I mean, it looks professional. really good job there, Lovable. Good job, Anton. FAQ section.

Ilan (14:22)
So basically everywhere where we

provided precise text to be used, it adhered to our text prompt. It did not hallucinate text. It only augmented the design where there wasn't clear direction.

David (14:40)
Yeah. So I would, I would give this an A to be honest. This is, ⁓ you know, excellent design taste. Although, you know, we had a bit of a hand in that, but nevertheless, ⁓ good job with the choice of how to apply that, right? We didn't spell that out exactly. Good job with the layout of everything. ⁓ And also with the adherence to the prompt.

Ilan (15:09)
Agreed.

David (15:09)
Alright, so that was Lovable. Let's move on to Base 44.

Ilan (15:12)
Should we give the page a refresh?

David (15:14)
So we're going to refresh this page and see how that goes.

looks like it was done already. ⁓

Ilan (15:22)
You know, this is a problem

that we had back in the day with Replit, where it be finished in the background, but the UI never changed.

David (15:30)
So Base 44, um, seems to also have used the, uh, styling guidelines quite well in terms of the choice of, uh, colors and, again, using the green as an accent.

Ilan (15:43)
It did, the one thing I would say is that we were explicit about a hand sketched vibe to the imagery and that's not really what it went for up here. Curious to see as we scroll down the page if it adhered to that elsewhere.

David (15:57)
Yeah.

Yeah. Although what it did put there is quite nice. Like I think it's a pretty good example of what some teacher feedback would be. Right. Where it says, great analysis of the theme. Yada yada. And then there's another one where it says, remember to cite your sources. And I guess that's all right. Yeah.

Ilan (16:03)
It's not bad.

Mm-hmm.

That's

not bad.

David (16:19)
Okay, so the numbers on the market problem.

Ilan (16:22)
Interestingly, it repeated one of the numbers in this marking burden section instead of just sticking with the two key numbers that we had put in our prompt.

David (16:35)
Yeah, it's trying really hard to put it into threes, which maybe it's a best practice. So it looks like what it did was it took the five hours saved per assignment and it divided that by the class size. And then it just sort of made an assumption about the time savings. Yeah.

Ilan (16:38)
Mm-hmm.

That's right.

David (16:52)
Okay, well that's still all right. Let's keep moving here. So this explains how Teachr works. I like how not only is there an explanation, but there's a CTA right away. We did not see that on the Lovable side. The CTA was all the way at the bottom. Whereas here, you know, and we see this in some websites as well, where the CTA is just like all over the homepage so that you can always take the action.

Ilan (17:04)
Mm.

That's right.

David (17:21)
that they're calling for.

Ilan (17:23)
It makes sense, right? At any point in the page where you get convinced that this is the product for your problem, you should be able to click on the CTA and get going.

David (17:33)
Yeah.

All right. So, ⁓ Hey, here's a different way of laying it out. So, ⁓ with Lovable, it did the three cards plus the, ⁓ sort of enterprise one. ⁓ but here it baked the two tiers into the middle one, which is teacher. ⁓ so

Ilan (17:50)
which is actually

the right way to display this because those are, it's basically an add-on to the same pricing plan.

David (18:00)
Yeah, very nice looking and again highlighting the middle option as ⁓ per standard practice and the FAQ looking pretty good again adheres to the prompt that we provided.

Ilan (18:12)
So overall, what do you think David? I think this is also an A.

David (18:16)
Yeah, I'd say this is great. Definitely an A, excellent job. Some small deviations, so not an A plus, but very well done for the very first pass and good adherence to the prompt.

Ilan (18:32)
Agreed.

So with what's our recommendation, David?

David (18:35)
I think that, uh, Lovable and Base 44 are, uh, head and shoulders above what Wix has to offer. It's too bad that Wix has, you know, fallen a little bit behind the competition. I think they can do a lot better. Um, but certainly if you're looking to create a landing page and you have maybe, you know, about a page or two worth of thoughts on what you want to put onto there Base 44 and Lovable can certainly get you there.

Ilan (19:02)
Well, with that, that's what we've got for you this week. Which tools have you used for creating your landing pages? Let us know in the comments. And as always, you can like and subscribe and follow us at @pandcpodcast on all the socials. See you next week.
